3 of 8 candidates enter review. 3 real defects caught, 0 missed, 0 false alarms (made-up labels).

This is the lot the threshold was chosen on, so it looks comfortable. That is a property of the choice, not evidence about the next lot.

The decision lens

A confidence threshold changes a queue, not the truth.

Move the illustrative threshold. Eight made-up candidates on made-up fabric enter review when their score is at or above it.

Synthetic fabric. Made-up scores and labels. No live camera.

Score ladder: each candidate sits at its made-up score. Right of the line is the review queue. Press a candidate to set the threshold to its score.

Every flagged region still needs a disposition.

A candidate enters review when its score is at or above the threshold. Counts use the fixture’s made-up labels. They are routing arithmetic, not accuracy, recall or a promise of detection performance.

A threshold decides which candidates enter a review queue. Evaluation must also examine missed defects and the burden of false alarms, using labelled material representative of the intended production.

There is no camera, trained model or real dataset behind this bench. Scores and labels are fixed fixtures that explain a routing rule, nothing more.

Keep the source boundary

A literature benchmark is not a site acceptance test.

The programme annex summarises inspection literature under R29, including reported manual and computer-vision performance. It gives no single article-level test protocol, common dataset or consistent error definition. Read those comparisons as context for investigation, not as an acceptance criterion for a particular fabric line.

TEST HERErepresentative fabric, labelled defects, declared error costs

Benchmark: even, controlled illumination. Your line: lamps age, daylight enters and finishes reflect differently. Test across the range the line will actually see.

Literature contextgrade C · not an acceptance criterion

Name the defect taxonomy, lighting, fabric construction, line speed and cost of error. Report precision and recall against labelled cases, including previously unseen lots, and keep the denominator explicit.

R29 is programme-annex literature context, grade C. No performance percentage from that summary is presented as GFT capability or a deployment guarantee. Conceptual frames, not footage. Drag the divider, or choose which condition to inspect.

The design sequence

Move from camera output to an operating decision.

The scan is only the first part of the system. A useful use case connects observation, evaluation and response. Each step below changes the candidate boxes and their disposition.

  1. DEFINE

    Define the observation.

Choose the defect classes, inspection unit and capture conditions. Record the operating range and sample difficult material deliberately. Keep lot identity with the image so a later failure can be traced to its conditions.

  2. EVALUATE

    Evaluate beyond the demonstration.

Separate development material from held-out evaluation lots. Examine missed cases, false alarms and uncertain labels. Test across the intended operating range before choosing a threshold or relying on a supplier’s headline score.

  3. DISPOSE

    Control the disposition.

Route a candidate to a trained reviewer or a bounded intervention. Preserve the image, decision and reason. Provide a manual fallback and stop conditions when capture quality, model health or system availability falls outside the approved range.

Show what the box becomes
The operating contract around the model

Industrial AI needs an operating contract around the model. Lighting drifts, material changes and connectivity fails. The design must explain how the system notices those conditions, who responds and how production continues safely while the issue is resolved. A successful demonstration under controlled conditions is a proposed capability, not proof of sustained operation.

Exclusions: record them, do not imply coverage.

Choose a deliverable

A reviewable scope

Specify evaluation, integration and recovery together.

The output should let an operating team and a reviewer understand exactly what the system is permitted to do. Keep the acceptance protocol separate from the sales demonstration.

Use-case and evidence specification

Define the task, material scope, defect taxonomy, labelling process and error consequences. Agree representative evaluation conditions before selecting a threshold. Record exclusions rather than allowing the model to imply coverage it has not earned.

Integration and human review design

Connect capture, inference, review and disposition to the existing quality routine. Keep local buffering, record identity and reconciliation in the design. Define the authority needed for a hold, release or process intervention.

Pilot and monitoring protocol

Test held-out lots, interruption recovery and the manual fallback. Monitor changes in inputs and outcomes after release. Keep a reversible model version and a clear owner for investigating a decline in operating performance.

Conditions that change the answer

Measure what the model costs the operating routine.

A model can produce plausible boxes while making inspection harder. Review burden, missed defects, rework and recovery all belong in the assessment.

Test Held-out lots, not shuffled rolls

Include fabric constructions, colours, finishes and defects that matter to the proposed operation. Hold out lots, rather than merely shuffling nearby images from the same roll into a nominal test set.

Pass sign The rule is judged on lots it never saw during tuning.

Test Numerator, denominator, conditions

Retain the inspection unit, labels, predictions and disposition. A performance claim needs its numerator, denominator and conditions. A dashboard score alone does not permit independent evaluation or investigation.

Count caught defects

Made-up labels, routing arithmetic, not recall.

Pass sign Every score travels with its numerator, denominator and conditions.

Test Uncertain signal routes to review

Define camera-health checks, uncertainty routing, rollback and manual inspection. Test them during a bounded pilot. A fallback that exists only in a document is not yet an operating capability.

Unresolved conditionSettle it at the disposition desk

Pass sign The fallback has run in a bounded pilot, not only on paper.

For a new operation, bought or licensed capabilities can be considered alongside simpler baselines. Owning the capture definitions and access to the operating evidence helps preserve the ability to evaluate, change or leave a vendor. The choice should follow the task, support conditions and total operating burden, rather than novelty.

A result that improves a laboratory metric but does not help the production decision has not demonstrated operating value. Keep the comparison anchored to the process the system would replace or support. No live inspection, measured model accuracy or realised GFT operating benefit is claimed. Synthetic demonstrations are explanatory only.
