The definition is part of the design

A shared word can hide a different denominator.

Production teams, analysts and buyers can use the same term for different things. Output might mean everything made, everything internally released or everything accepted by a customer. Quality might describe a first inspection, a final release or the absence of a particular defect. A glossary helps only when it exposes those boundaries. It cannot make incompatible records comparable simply by giving their columns the same heading.

Set the rule in practice

Start with the work the term describes. State the unit, the time window, the inclusion rule and the decision it supports. Then check that the event record uses the same definition. If a term changes between departments, retain that difference until the operating owners agree a common meaning. A clear local definition is more useful than an impressive acronym that nobody can apply consistently on the floor.

Built from the research

Paper definitions remain attached to their argument.

The glossary is assembled from the research outlines available when the site is built. It reads their glossary entries, removes repeated term labels and retains each contributing paper’s wording. The selected-definition panel shows that provenance. A missing outline contributes no entries; an unreadable outline is skipped with a build warning. This prevents the page from manufacturing a definition for a paper that has not supplied one.

How a paper's wording is kept

The first displayed wording is an editorial starting point, not a declaration that other definitions are wrong. Some terms legitimately change with the measurement purpose. Accepted output for a resource-intensity calculation may require a different release boundary from buyer acceptance. Inspect the paper-specific variants and use the one that fits your question. Paper preparation status also matters: a glossary entry from an outline does not prove that a reviewed paper or a released PDF exists.

The last three papers you opened

Highlighted words also appear in another paper's wording of the same term. Select a paper in the chart to bring its clause to the front.

Count

Counts are read from the research outlines at build time. A paper's presence here is not a release status.

A thread is not a certificate

A label cannot prove the claim it names.

A term names a claim. Only a record, a method and a test population can show that it holds.

Read the reasoning

Traceability, sustainability and digital maturity describe questions that require evidence. Using their terminology does not establish a chain of custody, demonstrate an environmental improvement or certify an architecture. Treat the definition as the beginning of a measurement contract. Ask what record would show that the stated condition holds, who can check it and what would invalidate it.

This is particularly important for model language. Accuracy, recall, error and coverage have different denominators. A result can look strong under one and fail the operating decision under another. The glossary keeps the words available; the method, source and test population must still accompany any claimed result. Read a definition with the application that gives it meaning.

Choose the definition that fits the decision. Write down what is included and excluded. A material term needs a material basis; a performance term needs a clock and a denominator.

State who reviews the measure and what decision follows. If a term changes, revise the calculation and comparison rules together. An old and a new definition should not be joined without explanation.

Keep distinctions useful

Near neighbours deserve separate entries.

Two connected terms can still describe different masses, states or intentions. Pick a pair and watch which words they really share.

Read the reasoning

Seed cotton and lint are connected materials, but they are not interchangeable masses. Installed capacity and throughput belong to the same operation, but describe different states. A forecast and a target can share a future date, while one predicts and the other expresses intent. These distinctions prevent an apparently tidy model from combining quantities that do not belong on the same basis.

Acronyms are terms too

Expand the letters before trusting them.

Read the reasoning

Acronyms deserve the same care. Expand the term, then read the definition rather than relying on familiarity. An operating team can choose a practical local abbreviation, provided its meaning is explicit and the source record remains intelligible. A glossary is therefore a maintenance task as well as a reading aid. When experience changes the definition, document the reason and make clear which historical comparisons need to be reconsidered.
